Six ways to spot a fake Pokémon card

Every item we sell is checked by hand before it is listed. If you buy elsewhere, these six checks catch most counterfeits.

1. Compare with a known original

Look up the exact card in an official database and compare the layout: name position, HP, attack text and the set symbol and number in the bottom corner.

2. Fonts and spelling

Fakes often use the wrong font, odd spacing or spelling mistakes such as wrong accents on “Pokémon”. Energy symbols that look too large or blurry are another warning sign.

3. Colour and print quality

Genuine cards have sharp, slightly matte printing. Counterfeits are often too saturated, too dark or too glossy, with a fuzzy or pixelated artwork.

4. Holo pattern and texture

Each era has its own holo pattern, and modern ultra rares have a fine raised texture you can feel. A flat rainbow foil over the whole card is a classic fake.

5. The light test

Shine a phone torch through the card. Genuine cards contain a dark layer and let little light through. Many fakes glow brightly.

6. Price too good to be true

A sought-after card far below market value is the biggest red flag. That is why we show the Cardmarket market price next to ours.
